FAQ

The ServSafe Food Handler Course and Assessment is designed for food preparers, food servers and other frontline staff. It may be completed by any individual that seeks knowledge of basic safe food handling procedures. Individuals who receive a ServSafe Food Handler Certificate have successfully completed a Food Handler Course and have basic knowledge of the topics covered in the course. This is an entry level training program and assessment for food service employees. It is not the ServSafe Food Manager certification.

The ServSafe® Food Manager Certification is designed for managers, chefs, owners and others with supervisory responsibilities in the food industry. The ServSafe Manager Certification verifies that a manager or person-in-charge has sufficient food safety knowledge to protect the public from foodborne illness. The ServSafe® Certification exam is accredited by American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-Conference for Food Protection (CFP) and is recognized in all 50 States. Check your local regulations for details.

The National Restaurant Association recognizes the ServSafe certification as valid for five years. However, some state and local jurisdictions and company policies will only recognize the certification as valid for three years like the District of Columbia, Maryland and parts of Virginia. Check with your local regulatory requirements.

If you want a certificate to be printed and mailed, you can select the option “Order Certificate”. There will be a $10.00 charge for each certificate that you request be mailed.

Some states require state specific training or have specific licensing requirements, which may include additional fees. Check the regulatory requirements to get complete, detailed information. We also recommend contacting your local health department, as they will have the most up to date information on requirements and associated costs in your area.

As of Thursday May 7, 2015, all ServSafe examinees with current certificates will have the ability to download and print their certificate under the Student menu and “Certificates” page. This will require that you have a User account created on Servsafe.com. If you don’t have a User account already, prepare by having a User account created for ServSafe.com. You will need to enter your Exam Session number to connect your exam records and ensure your certificate will be visible to print.

If you want a certificate to be printed and mailed, you can select the option “Order Certificate”. There will be a $10.00 charge for each certificate that you request be mailed.

All exams are multiple choice.

The ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Examination (ServSafe Manager Exam) is available in:

  • Online: English, Spanish and Chinese.
  • Print: English, Spanish/English, Korean/English, Chinese/English, French Canadian/English, Japanese/English, and Large Print.
  • In addition, there is an Instructor Exam in English for anyone interested in becoming a Certified ServSafe Instructor.

If the exam is not available in your native language, you can utilize a native language to English dictionary during the exam. You can also inform your instructor of the issue before attending the class and request that your instructor submit a Request for Exam Accommodation form to potentially have the exam read aloud.

Training can be administered on a computer with online courses or in a classroom setting with instructor-led courses. However, all ServSafe Exams, whether online or print-based must be taken in the presence of a licensed proctor. Check regulatory requirements for more specific details, or contact your local health department.

Included in your ServSafe Manager course fees are a printable food safety workbook, a sample 80 question practice test, and either a ServSafe Exam Answer Sheet or a ServSafe Exam Access Code to take the ServSafe Manager Exam. ServSafe textbooks are available for an additional purchase but are not required.

A passing score is 75% or higher. This is obtained by answering at least 60 out of 80 questions correctly. The exam has 90 questions; however there are 10 pilot questions that are for research purposes only.

All examinees who pass the exam receive an 8 x 12 certificate with tear-off analysis of their overall score by content domain. Examinees who do not pass will only receive the analysis of their overall score by content domain. Your certificate will be provided to you by the person your instructor or proctor designated as the official score and certificate distributor. Certificate distributors may be your instructor or proctor, the class sponsor, or possibly your employer.

No. You must have a proctor administer the ServSafe Manager Examination, any ServSafe Alcohol Print Exam and the ServSafe Alcohol Advanced Exam. An instructor must administer a ServSafe Food Handler print exam. The ServSafe Food Handler online exam and the ServSafe Alcohol Primary Online Exam do not require a proctor.

Results are posted to ServSafe.com within 3 to 4 business days after the National Restaurant Association receives the completed Exam Information Form and Answer Sheets. Online exam results are available within 1 business day or as soon as the proctor submits the exam to be graded. Proctors and examinees who provide valid email addresses will receive notices once scores are available.

You can view your results online by logging in to Check Your Exam Score, or print out and return a Certificate and Score Release Request Form. You may also obtain your exam score from the person your instructor or proctor designated as the official score and certificate distributor. Certificate distributors may be your instructor or proctor, the class sponsor, or possibly your employer.
